Each person celebrates the festive season in their own unique way so we thought it would be nice to shine a light on how our team at Skyline spends and celebrates the holidays.

From travelling, to decking the halls, to relaxing at home… the holiday season means something different to each of us! Find out what our treasured Christmas traditions are, our best-loved foods and even our favourite reindeers below.


 

Ken Cunz – Managing Director

What is your favourite holiday tradition?
We always have a Christmas Cookie decorating competition for which I am the judge.  Not surprisingly, I have won the competition for 37 consecutive years!

Who do you spend Christmas with?
We celebrate with our extended family of 35 to 40 people.  It is loud with lots of fun, food and drink!

What does your typical Christmas look like?
With such a large group, it is chaotic once everyone arrives around noon. Our feast is usually about 2PM and then everything begins to settle into a more manageable pace.  The last guests often don’t leave until well into the evening.

What is your favourite Christmas Carol or Song?
Mary did you know?

What is your favourite Christmas Memory from adulthood?
The best memories are when the kids were young and their excitement surrounding the Christmas season.

When do you put your Christmas tree up?
NEVER before the 1st of December!

Do you usually decorate your home? How do you decorate it for Christmas?
My Wife does a great job with theming the house.

Do you have Christmas Lights outside of your house?
Not traditionally, but this year, we have a full complement of decorative outside lights.

Midnight supper after Christmas Mass

Friends or family

What is your favourite thing to eat at Christmas?
Northern Hemisphere – lengua
Southern Hemisphere – cold prawns

What is the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
Being with loved ones.

What is the most annoying thing about this time of year?
No parking at shopping centres

Do you travel at Christmas or Stay at home? (Pre-Covid)
Travel! 

Do you usually decorate your home? How do you decorate it for Christmas?
Nope! 


 

Rebecca Hagen – Marketing Manager

What is your favourite holiday tradition?
I love looking at Christmas lights.

Who do you spend Christmas with?
My extended family and often my husband’s extended family.  So about 70+ people to fit into the day!

What does your typical Christmas look like?
Christmas eve usually sharing a nice meal with my in-laws, staying the night and sharing Christmas morning and/or lunch with them and then the rest of the day with my huge extended family. Basically just in a food coma for 99% of the day.

What is your favourite Christmas Carol or Song?
Love Actually

What is your favourite thing to eat at Christmas?
Honey Glazed Ham and Eggnog

What is the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
Spending time with family and surviving the heat

What is your favourite Christmas Memory from adulthood?
Having our first Christmas with our 3-week old son last year

When do you put your Christmas tree up?
Usually pretty slack but now we have a child trying to go for the 1st December but alas it hasn’t happened yet 😉


 

Rebecca Bell – Marketing Coordinator 

What is your favourite holiday tradition?
Going to look at the Christmas lights!

What does your typical Christmas look like?
My Typical Christmas changes a little each year, but it usually Christmas morning we celebrate as a household. At mid-morning we head off to my parents or sisters and have some fun in the pool and the sunshine. There’s always a lot of laughs, an abundance of food and a lot of fun. We also celebrate with my partner Aaron’s sister whether it’s on Christmas Eve, Christmas or Boxing Day.

What is your favourite Christmas Movie?
How the Grinch Stole Christmas

What is your fondest Christmas memory from when you were a child?
Being the youngest in the family, I would always wake up first. I would go sit down in front of the Christmas tree and wait with anticipation for what the day would bring – that feeling of Christmas Magic will always be my favourite.  Now I’m older, with my own family I love to help create that magic.

When do you put your Christmas tree up?
Usually never before the 1st of December – but this year we did it a bit earlier so the kids could be involved and it’s 2020 so any bit of joy is a good thing.

Who is your favourite Reindeer?
Comet! Comet is the strongest of all the reindeer and is known for being a stubborn but loyal member of the team. 

What is the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
Quality family time

What is the most annoying thing about this time of year?
The crowds and the traffic!


 

Dave Norman – Senior Project Manager 

What is your favourite holiday tradition?
When the real Christmas tree gets delivered and we spend the day decorating the house for Christmas.

What does your typical Christmas look like?
A typical Christmas to us is Christmas lunch spent with family swapping gifts and telling stories. In the afternoon we then head to my Godparents house for dinner, fun and games.

What is your fondest Christmas memory from when you were a child?
Getting a battery-operated police car that I could drive around.

What is your favourite Christmas Memory from adulthood?
Spending Christmas 2018 in London, having Christmas eve dinner at Fortnum and Mason, drinks at the Shard and Midnight Mass at Westminster Abbey.

What is the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
Following traditions, making new traditions and most importantly making memories.

Do you travel at Christmas or Stay at home? (Pre-Covid)
We travel to London every 3 years to try for a White Christmas and then the other two years are spent in Brisbane with family. We are aiming for a NZ Christmas soon.

Do you usually decorate your home? How do you decorate it for Christmas?
We decorate the home with ornaments and decorations that we have collected over the years on our travels or that we find out and about. The collection grows each year.

Do you have Christmas Lights outside of your house?
We have Christmas lights in our courtyard and this year we have decorated the tree outside our building on the street with Christmas lights and red and white flowers underneath – It’s a competition with our neighbours.


 

Nathan Cain – Project Manager 

Who do you spend Christmas with?
I mostly spend Christmas with my wife, daughter and extended family.

What is your favourite Christmas Carol or Song?
Fairytale of New York by the Pogues

What is your favourite Christmas Movie?
It’s not a Christmas movie, but James Bond is always played in our house at Christmas.

What is your favourite thing to eat at Christmas?
Brandy Butter, Roast Potatoes and Yorkshire Puddings (not together though)

What is your fondest Christmas memory from when you were a child?
Christmas around my grandma’s house and my dad and Uncle trying to convince me that gherkins were actually made of baby crocodiles. 

What tops your Christmas tree?
It used to be the good old Christmas star but now my daughter tends to make something new each year so who knows what it is this year.

What is the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
Seeing Lucy get excited each day leading up to Christmas day

What is the most annoying thing about this time of year?
For me, Christmas should be cold, dark and snowing so I find it pretty annoying that it’s always so hot at this time of year in Australia.

Spending time with family and unwinding

Yummy Christmas food

Getting lots of presents

Peace

What is the most annoying thing about this time of year?
I NEVER drive to the shops close to the festive season, that’s where you will find the worst drivers with the worst attitudes

What does your typical Christma look like?
A normal Christmas consists of waking up anytime in the morning then waiting till everyone is awake to exchange presents. Then followed by a big breakfast and relaxing.

What is your favourite Christmas Carol or Song?
Xmas time of the year – Green Day 29.25

What is your favourite Christmas Movie?
The first Die Hard

What is your favourite thing to eat at Christmas?
A baked and glazed ham

Who is your favourite Reindeer?
Comet

What is the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
Having everyone together at some point during the day.

Do you travel at Christmas or Stay at home? (Pre-Covid).
We will generally stay home or travel nearby to visit family.

Do you usually decorate your home? How do you decorate it for Christmas?
We will normally decorate the outside of the house with lights. And then we have some Christmas items around the house

Staying safe over the holiday, Christmas time is busy and dangerous on the roads in particular

Yes, some ornaments, bells and other bits and pieces are up around the house
